NEW YORK (WABC) — New York transit officials head to federal court Thursday, escalating their fight with the federal government over tens of millions of dollars in funding for the Second Avenue Subway project.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is suing for $60 million in federal funds it says were improperly withheld from the long-delayed expansion into East Harlem. Oral arguments are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Washington.
Despite the legal battle, the MTA says construction is moving forward on the next phase of the project, which would extend the Q line from 96th Street to 125th Street and Lexington Avenue, including a new stop at 106th Street.
The lawsuit comes after transit officials warned the White House in February that legal action would follow if the funding was not released.
The East Harlem expansion is expected to be completed by 2032 and is part of a broader project estimated to cost billions, with a significant portion funded by the federal government.
MTA officials say work will continue as the case moves through the courts.
