Authorities are investigating after a man fell onto a Brooklyn train track and was fatally struck by a train following a fight over a backpack early on Tuesday morning.
Police could still be seen on the platform of the New Lots Avenue station after a man had been fatally struck by a northbound 3 train just before 12:45 a.m. on May 19.
Sources familiar with the investigation say the incident occurred when a man left his backpack on the train, only to return and discover it had been taken by another rider. The straphanger confronted the apparent thief, and the pair had some kind of physical altercation that moved between the train cars.

During the dispute, the alleged bag thief fell through the gap between the train and the roadbed; he was crushed by the train as it began to roll out of the station.
Responding EMS units and officers from the 75th Precinct and Transit District 33 pronounced the man dead at the scene. As of Tuesday afternoon, his identity had yet to be released.
No arrests have currently been made, and it is unclear if the other man involved will face charges.
The investigation remains ongoing.
