SUFFOLK COUNTY, Long Island (WABC) — The Suffolk County district attorney announced Friday they have charged a postal worker with stealing gift cards and greeting cards out of the mail.
DA Raymond Tierney says Jovanni Jamison-Lewis, 35, was caught red-handed on surveillance video at the Oakdale post office.
They say she ripped the gift cards out of envelopes at the post office and took some mail home.
In a sting operation, an officer bought a gift card and mailed it and when they traced its progress, they allegedly caught the postal worker using it at TJ Maxx.
“We want people to safely enjoy the holiday season and for those bad actors who are going to exploit our citizens and steal their property, we will hold you responsible no matter what,” Tierney said.
Jamison-Lewis was arrested on Nov. 24 and officials say at that time, she had two stolen pieces of mail hidden in her pants and four more in her pocketbook. Investigators searched her home and vehicle and allegedly recovered 20 more pieces of stolen mail.
The suspect was arraigned Friday morning on charges including grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and official misconduct.
Jamison-Lewis resigned after her arrest. She was released after being charged and is due back in court in January.
The Suffolk DA says anyone who thinks they were a victim should reach out at (631) 853-4626.
