CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (WABC) — An NYPD officer was shot early Sunday morning near the intersection of Nostrand Avenue and St. Johns Place in Brooklyn, according to police.
The shooting occurred at approximately 4:14 a.m. The officer was struck in his bulletproof vest and transported to Kings County Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities say he is expected to be OK. A suspect is in custody, and charges are pending.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch provided preliminary details about the incident during a briefing.
Tisch said bodycams were not on during the incident since it unfolded “quickly and unexpectedly.” She said cams were turned on after three officers discharged their weapons. They did not hit the suspect.
According to Tisch, a person, who was captured on video five minutes prior to the incident with a firearm, approached an unmarked police vehicle.
“Officers exited their vehicle and attempted to engage the armed individual,” Tisch said. “There is also ballistic damage to the department vehicle that the officers were sitting in, including bullet holes in the front and rear windshield and the passenger side of the car.”
The unnamed suspect was apprehended after a foot pursuit at Rogers Avenue and Union Street. The suspect was tased after resisting arrest, Tisch said, and a firearm was recovered.
Detective Robert Carroll, who was struck by gunfire in his bulletproof vest, had a contusion on his back. Tisch said a second officer suffered a contusion to the face and shoulder.
Tisch said the suspect was an 18-year-old male and would not identify him.
“What happened this morning is a reminder that police officers never know what will happen when they begin a tour,” said Tisch.
