NORTH ARLINGTON, New Jersey (WABC) — Two men were killed in a shooting Sunday night in North Arlington, New Jersey, after an altercation between two small groups of people, authorities said.
North Arlington police responded to reports of gunfire near the intersection of Ridge Road and Belleville Turnpike around 8:37 p.m. Officers arriving at the scene found two adult men suffering from gunshot wounds, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.
First responders rendered aid to the victims, ages 28 and 29, before they were transported by separate ambulances to University Hospital in Newark. Both men were later pronounced dead.
The shooting occurred near the border of North Arlington and Kearny, where Ridge Road becomes Kearny Avenue.
A preliminary investigation found the gunfire erupted during an altercation involving two small groups of people, prosecutors said. Investigators have not released a motive, and the identities of the victims are being withheld pending notification of their families.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, Kearny Police Department and Lyndhurst Police Department.
Detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Special Investigations Squad launched a joint investigation with the North Arlington Police Department shortly after the shooting.
The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities said additional details will be released when they become available.
