ROCKY POINT, Long Island (WABC) — People on Long Island are hoping not to see a repeat after Thursday night’s storms, which caused damage, including fires, and knocked out power for thousands of people.
The winds toppled trees in several towns, and on Friday, schools in Central Islip and Amityville are being dismissed early due to the heat.
In Massapequa, the power lines are still down, and PSE&G crews are working to repair it right now.
There was a massive tree that fell across one lawn in town, missing a home but taking down power lines in the process.
“It was a little shocking this morning when you see trees down all over the place but I didn’t expect it to be this heavy and this windy,” said Massapequa resident Christ Jurasits.
On the South Shore of Long Island neighbors were shocked to wake up Friday morning and see trees fallen and power lines pulled down from the severe thunderstorms, which prompted alerts from the National Weather Service.
On the North Shore in Suffolk County, many communities sustained damage, including in Rocky Point, where the fire department responded to 17 alarms in just over an hour Thursday night, and six other departments aided in the response.
There are still trees and wires down. On Long Island, there were 1,108 power outages from the storms.
Over in New York City, there were 2,780 power outages because of the storms and heat. Con Edison crews were seen making repairs Friday afternoon in Middle Village, Queens.
The weather causing a lot of issues for people.
Lori Herbert lives on Ridge Road in Rocky Point and was grateful that she listened to the warnings and stayed indoors as a tree on her property came crashing down onto her car in the driveway.

“I got the text that there was going to be a storm stay away from the windows, and I heard a couple of bolts of lightning and a loud crash and here we are, my car is shot,” Hebert said.
Herbert said some volunteers from her church helped cut the tree up and removed it from her car. She’s one of many people cleaning up from the mess these storms caused Thursday night.
