Police said a 9-year-old boy was fatally struck by a yellow school bus driver in Williamsburg on Friday morning.
Police responded to reports of a pedestrian struck at the intersection of Lee Avenue and Lorimer Street shortly after 8:15 a.m. The child had injuries to his head and body and was transported to Woodhull Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, NYPD officials said.
The 49-year-old bus driver was making a left turn from Lee Avenue onto Lorimer Street when he hit the child, according to police. The driver initially left the scene, police said, but returned after being notified of the incident.
An NYPD spokesperson said they did not yet know if the bus was from a private or public school.
Police said no arrests have been made and they are waiting to release the child’s identity until the family has been notified.
The hectic, five-year intersection had no crosswalk markings Friday. Councilmember Lincoln Restler said it underwent recent road work, and called on the city to expedite panting new crosswalk markings.
