SHEEPSHEAD BAY, Brooklyn (WABC) — Residents along a street in Brooklyn are dealing with a mess after they woke up Tuesday morning to a water main break that flooded their homes with water and mud.
The block between Emmons Avenue and Shore Parkway in Sheepshead Bay is covered in a frozen mud after a water main burst in the middle of the night.
“This morning. I woke up around 5 in the morning. I was about to leave for work, and I start walking through my house and there’s a puddle in the middle of my living room,” said resident Elan Samarin. “And I keep walking through. I see the orange lights, and next thing I know, I turn the lights on. Everything is covered in mud. And it was it was a mess.”‘
The pipe gave way around 2:30 a.m., sending water flowing into garages and first-floor apartments, dipping the area in a mud bath.
“My grandma lives down there in the basement and I think she was doing like a prayer in the morning,” said resident, Amir Aslamov. “And that’s how she woke up. And she said there was like some weird noise going on. And then she saw that the water was coming in.”
Workers eventually shut off the water and started digging into the street to remove and replace the busted main, but there was no stopping the spilled water from freezing on the street and around parked cars.
“I hope the city’s going to help because it’s the city’s fault. It’s not our fault,” Aslamov said.
There was some water during the day so residents like Samarin, who took the day off from work, could clean their homes.
By Tuesday night, there was another note from the DEP alerting them of another water shut off. They said the tap for one of the homes was damaged during the break and a new one needs to beinstalled. They said a portion of the water main will also be replaced, and repair work and a temporary shutdown will take place overnight to minimize disruption to residents.
By Wednesday morning, all this should be just a bad dream and water should be restored, but then the next phase begins to fix damaged appliances and furniture and figure out who is going to pay for the mess.
“I believe all these houses, pretty much all of them, the basement is done,” Aslamov said.
