NEW YORK (WABC) — Dozens of rookie and probationary police officers will stay on the job after the NYPD settled a legal challenge from the Police Benevolent Association.
The NYPD told 30 officers to retire or be fired after discovering they had failed psychological exams or background checks but had somehow made it on the force through hiring errors.
“I’m appreciative that we have found a path forward for these officers to protect and serve our city. as the NYPD closes the single highest hiring year on record, the department remains laser focused on continuing to drive crime down and delivering on historic public safety gains,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a statement.
“We are grateful to have reached a resolution that allows these police officers to continue their careers,” PBA President Patrick Hendry added.
Under the agreement reached Monday, the officers will serve a 36-month probation, more than the 24 that all new officers must complete. If the officers commit misconduct, the department can factor the failed psychological evaluations or background checks into their punishment.
The officers were hired between 2023 and 2024 had received a final notice of disqualification for various reasons during the application process.
Despite failing their background checks, they were able to enter the police academy.
Some of the disqualifying reasons included lying about criminal convictions, past arrests and license suspensions as well as hiding firearms.
