NEW YORK (WABC) — This time of year, there’s always a constant stream of packages arriving at your front door. But sometimes you get something you didn’t order.
While it’s exciting to receive an unexpected gift, you need to proceed with caution.
Consumer experts warn that these surprise deliveries could be part of a growing scam known as “brushing.”
Scammers send unordered items to boost online seller ratings or to gain access to your personal information.
It may seem harmless, but it could mean your name, address, and other details are being misused.
If you receive a package you didn’t order, don’t assume it’s a free gift.
Check your accounts for suspicious activity and report it to the retailer or delivery service.
Never share personal information with anyone claiming to “fix” the issue.
Do not scan any QR codes and return the product if you can.
