FAR ROCKAWAY, Queens (WABC) — A domestic dispute ended in a deadly police-involved shooting in Queens early Sunday.
NYPD responded to a call about a 29-year-old man armed with a box cutter at 11870 Nameoke Street in Far Rockaway at 12:25 a.m.
The man’s parents met two officers outside the building. Together, they entered the apartment to try to locate the 29-year-old, but he was not inside, officials said.
As the group exited the apartment, the man was spotted in the hallway holding a box cutter, according to Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera. The situation escalated quickly when the man’s father engaged in a physical altercation with his son.
Officers issued multiple verbal commands for the man to drop the weapon as they attempted to de-escalate the confrontation, but the man did not comply, Rivera said.
The father eventually retreated behind the officers, at which point the suspect charged at police.
One officer deployed a Taser, while another officer, who was in close proximity to the suspect, discharged a firearm, striking the man as he continued to advance.
Officers immediately performed first aid, including CPR, before EMS transported the man to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The officers involved were also taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
The NYPD stated that the entire incident was captured on body-worn cameras.
The box cutter was recovered at the scene.
“This incident, once again, demonstrates the dangers that our police officers face every day, and how routine calls can quickly escalate into extremely dangerous situations,” Rivera said.
The Force Investigations Division is currently reviewing the case.
