MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) — High winds spun a crane 20 stories high Friday night in Midtown, Manhattan.
Police shut down Broadway between West 54th and 55th streets for some time as inspectors made sure the area was safe, but the streets have since been reopened.
“I’m worried that it would fall on us,” a pedestrian said.
The Department of Buildings said the crane was put in something called ‘weathervaning’ made, which is a common safety feature that reduces wind loads.
The winds were whipping, but the crane was spinning because it was supposed to, officials said.
After an inspection, the DOB did not find any safety concerns.
