QUEENS, New York (WABC) — Port Authority police were investigating an apparent road rage incident on the Van Wyck Expressway near JFK Airport on Tuesday morning.
Police responded around 4:50 a.m. for reports of a two-vehicle accident on the southbound Van Wyck Expressway near the entrance to JFK Airport’s central terminal area.
Upon arrival, officials identified an on-duty Customs and Border Protection officer who stated he had been assaulted by another driver following the minor car collision.The officer told police he fired his duty weapon several times during the altercation in self defense.
No one was injured as a result of the incident.
Officials say the driver of the other vehicle left before Port Authority police arrived on scene. No other individuals were on scene or have been located at this time.
Drivers heading to JFK Airport should expect delays and follow detours as a result of the incident.
NewsCopter 7 was over the Van Wyck Expressway on Tuesday morning as police responded to the incident, which caused a temporary closure. The southbound Van Wyck closure diverted traffic onto local roads around Kennedy Airport, but reopened one lane around 7 a.m.
The JFK Expressway is open, and drivers are able to use that to access the terminals.
Passengers were encouraged to use the Air Train to JFK. Travelers were also urged to check on their flight status.
