NEW YORK (WABC) — Santa might be checking his list twice, but so are scammers. This holiday season is ripe with opportunities to rip you off.
7 On Your Side is talking about holiday e-card scams. Just think of all the emails you might get this time of year: party invitations, season’s greetings, gift cards. All of these things mean one thing for scammers: opportunity!
Here’s one we found, a company Christmas party invitation. There’s a link to RSVP, but that’s where they get you. And all they need is for you to do one thing: click on their link.
Here’s how to protect yourself. Verify before you click. If the invitation is from someone you know, pick up the phone and check with them first. Hover over the link and make sure it’s leading you to the right place and not an imposter website.
Do not download anything from unknown senders. This is how malware gets on your device. Finally, never provide personal or financial information over email.
According to Amy Nofziger, the director of fraud victim support at AARP’s Fraud Watch Network, Ignore them! Do not click on the link.
If you do fall victim to this scam, act fast. Change your passwords immediately and run antivirus software to help cleanse your device.
