NEW YORK (WABC) — Con Edison spent much of Thursday trying to restore power to thousands of customers throughout New York City after the extreme heat caused scattered outages.
Customers in certain areas of Yonkers, Pelham, Mount Vernon, Bronxville, Eastchester, New Rochelle, and the Town of Mamaroneck in Westchester, and in certain areas of the Northeast Bronx and City Island, are asked to conserve energy while crews repair equipment.
Officials previously asked customers in the northwest section of the Bronx and the northern tip of Manhattan, including Riverdale, Marble Hill, Kingsbridge and Van Cortlandt Park, to conserve energy.
Con Edison has reduced voltage in the area by 8% to protect equipment and maintain service as crews make repairs.
Thousands of customers were still without power as of 10:30 p.m. Thursday, according to Con Edison’s outage map.
The utility is asking customers not to use energy-intensive appliances such as washers, dryers, and microwaves until crews complete repairs.
Customers are also asked to limit unnecessary use of air conditioning. If you have two air conditioners, use only one and set it to the highest comfortable temperature.
Gov. Kathy Hochul said state officials are monitoring the electrical grid to ensure it can withstand increased energy use.
“My team has been coordinating with Con-Ed, NYISO and New York City leaders to ensure all large consumers are able to switch to other fuel sources have done so to reduce their usage,” Hochul said. “Due to the increase in energy demand and unexpected load challenges, I am also calling on New Yorkers to do their part to proactively conserve electricity if safe to do so by setting air conditioning units between 75-78 degrees and avoiding unnecessary appliance use. These small steps can go a long way.”
