Police officers fatally shot two dogs in Queens on Monday night after one of them bit and injured their owner, according to the NYPD.
Officials said officers arrived at the New York City Housing Authority’s Ocean Bay Apartments in Edgemere just before 9 p.m., responding to a 911 call about dangerous animals.
Inside a building on Beach 58th Street near Beach Channel Drive, they found two pit bulls acting aggressively. One was attacking a 28-year-old woman, police said.
Authorities said one officer discharged their firearm, killing the dog who had attacked the woman and accidentally hitting the other one.
One of the dogs died at the scene, while animal control officers took the other dog to a veterinarian, where it died from its injuries, according to the NYPD.
Police said no people were hit by the gunfire.
The woman was taken to a local hospital in stable condition for treatment for a laceration wound from the dog bite, authorities said. Two officers were also treated for minor injuries, police said.
Officials said the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division was looking into the incident. Police did not make any immediate arrests in the case.
