MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) — An off-duty security guard was shot multiple times amid a dispute with another man in Midtown on Monday afternoon.
The shooting was reported just before 12:30 p.m. along East 28th Street and Madison Avenue, right near a film set.
The victim is described by investigators as a security guard at the Prince George, a single-room occupancy hotel two doors down from the crime scene, which is now supportive housing for people transitioning from homeless shelters and the streets.
The 49-year-old victim was shot twice in the torso. He was taken to the hospital and is said to be stable.
Police say the victim saw the suspect on the street and it is believed the two had an ongoing dispute.
As a film crew packed up Monday night, after a long day of work on a TV drama, they were still absorbing the real-life violence that practically took place on their set, as many of them were taking lunch breaks.
“I heard the shots, and then I saw the guy fall to the ground. And then I saw the, I guess the assailant take off running and turned the corner, and the guy started screaming and everybody ran over and tried to help him,” said a witness who was with the film crew.
Police gathered evidence like shell casings where the victim fell on 28th Street.
“When they took him into the ambulance he was still moving around and talking and stuff,” said Gabe Monroe, who works nearby.
Startled witnesses ducked into businesses like a supermarket across the street.
Margaret Gilligan was working in the supermarket when a witness burst into the store.
“She was in distress, crying, visibly upset and struggling to breathe and hyperventilating,” Gilligan said. “So I just tried to get her into a more like private spot where she could sit down, get her some water, some tissues. She told me that she saw a man shoot another man and that she ran into the store after and said that some other people on the street also ran into the store to seek shelter.”
“They put us on lockdown, like they told everybody to stay inside, to be careful because the guy ran,” said Anieska Monsanto, who was working on the film set.
The non-profit that manages the Prince George says it’s cooperating with the NYPD’s investigation.
One neighbor described the 49-year-old security guard as well liked, and someone who was good at de-escalating a tense situation.
The suspect ran away but authorities say they have a good idea of who they are looking for.
No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
