NEW JERSEY (WABC) — New Jersey Transit should be back to normal for the Monday morning commute, as one track of the new Portal North Bridge officially goes into passenger service.
Last week’s issue with overhead wires on the old Portal Bridge has been fixed, and the first phase of the cutover work has been completed.
The wire trouble caused chaos on Friday, just a day after NJ Transit was touting the opening of the new Portal Bridge.
NJ Transit passengers have been dealing with a month of delays and changes due to the new Portal Bridge project.
Amtrak is also working to eventually transfer rail service from the old Portal Bridge to the new one over the Hackensack River.
For the past month, crews have been working on one of the new tracks on the new Portal Bridge.
As for the second track on the new bridge, that work will begin in the fall to ultimately merge all rail traffic onto the new bridge.
The old Portal Bridge will then be demolished.
