What happens when you combine a spray tan business, Australia, an exploding crocodile and the mob? You get “Sunny Nights,” a new dark comedy streaming on Hulu.
Will Forte and D’Arcy Carden star as Martin and Vicki, siblings who start a spray tan business. They bring their idea to Australia, where Martin’s estranged wife lives. After a meeting where his wife tells him they need to be just friends, Martin has a one-night stand that turns into a blackmail/extortion situation and chaos ensues.
“Will is like strait-laced, follow the rules, wants to do good. I’m more of a wildcard. She’s hard to contain,” Carden told On The Red Carpet about her character, Vicki. “They take this business all the way to Australia where they get into a little bit of trouble pretty quickly – and there ends up being a bit of violence.”
“They had only written two episodes when I had to make the decision whether I was gonna do it or not,” Forte said. “These 2 episodes were so well done, it was just really easy to go for it.”
The brother-sister chemistry came naturally for Carden and Forte, who both came up in the comedy world. But their similarities didn’t stop there!
“We’re from the same hometown. He went to the same high school that my sister went to. Like, there (are) so many overlaps,” said Carden. “We know the same Taco Bell!”
“The writing is so good and we just had so much fun with each other. We really did come out of it feeling like brother and sister. Very, very quickly. She’s just one of my favorite people,” said Forte.
“Same,” added Carden.
Both had the best time filming on location in Australia.
“You know what was really cool is, we never shot on like a set or a stage. Everything was practical locations,” said Carden. “We got to see so much of Australia through the locations that we shot on.”
“We were living right down by Bondi Beach. Bondi Tony’s. We got some of the best cheeseburgers we’ve ever had (there),” Forte added, noting that Sydney reminded them of Northern California. “It just felt so familiar, yet at the same time it was this completely new experience with this delightful (cast). Everyone there was just so welcoming.”
“I hope people watch it so we can go make another one!”
