Get a behind-the-scenes look at how the Oscar statues are made

ROCK TAVERN, N.Y. — Each Oscar statuette represents months of craftsmanship, beginning their journey at Urban Art Projects in Rock Tavern, New York.

For the past decade, each and every Oscar has made the journey from there to Hollywood.

Each statuette stands thirteen and a half inches tall, weighs eight-and-a-half pounds and takes about six months to complete.

“It gives it a sense of timelessness. It’s this heavy object. It’s meaningful,” said manufacturing manager Ivan Goodman.

The Oscar statue starts as a wax figure, then every line gets smoothed and prepped for a ceramic bath.

After that, it is filled with bronze and sent 70 miles south to New York City, where it receives a beautiful 24K gold coating.

Next, it returns to Rock Tavern for assembly to the base and finishing touches.

They are then shipped off to the Academy for the big night.

“I get overwhelmed with joy watching it on TV, you know, it’s a lot of sweat, hard work and talent that goes behind it,” said Finishing Team Lead Salvador Guzman, Jr.

Each Oscar statue has a unique serial number, which is stamped by AMPAS, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
