A coyote in Westchester County tested positive for rabies after attacking three people and six dogs on Monday, according to local health officials.
The incident took place near Siwanoy Country Club and Twin Lakes Park in the Eastchester and Bronxville area, officials said.
Health officials said anyone bitten or scratched by an animal should seek medical attention immediately.
They also said that anyone who has had contact with an animal suspected of having rabies should report it to the county health department.
A rabid animal may behave aggressively or appear unusually tame. Other signs can include staggering or frothing at the mouth.
New York state law requires dogs, cats and ferrets to be vaccinated against rabies and receive regular booster shots.
