SUNSET PARK, Brooklyn (WABC) — Police are searching for the suspects who fatally shot a 14-year-old boy in the head in Brooklyn late Friday evening.
The deadly shooting happened just before midnight near 46th Street and Ninth Avenue in Sunset Park.
According to the NYPD, the 14-year-old was inside a car with a driver when three individuals approached the vehicle and an argument ensued. The teenager was then shot in the head during the dispute.
The suspects, who were wearing ski masks and dressed in black, managed to flee the scene afterwards.
The driver of the car rushed the victim to Maimonides Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities later identified the victim as Johary Cantave of Brooklyn.
Outside the hospital, police cordoned off the vehicle in which the victim was transported in, which shows the back window shot out. Video also captures responding officers canvassing nearby the crime scene, where they recovered a shell casing from the shooting.
Eyewitness News spoke with the driver of the car, who says he was following his son on a moped. The driver was driving Cantave, who is friends with his son, back home on Friday night.
The driver’s son was leading them to the Cantave’s home when the group of suspects started harassing him while he was on the moped. The father told his son to keep riding his moped when shots were fired at the car, resulting in the 14-year-old passenger getting struck in the head.
It is unclear at this time what was the cause of the dispute or whether the teenager was the intended target of the shooting.
Authorities continue to investigate a possible motive for the incident.
