LOS ANGELES — Get ready to “go wild” for Disney and Pixar’s latest animated comedy, “Hoppers.”
The new movie is now playing in theaters everywhere and On The Red Carpet is taking you inside the making of the film with the cast and crew.
In “Hoppers,” an animal lover named Mabel uses cutting-edge technology to “hop” her mind into a robotic beaver so she can communicate directly with the wild creatures she’s been fascinated with her whole life.
Of course, for a human, living like an animal isn’t easy. But thankfully, Mabel meets another beaver named King George who is happy to help!
“When I was first pitched the movie, when I first met with (director) Daniel (Chong), he called it a cross between ‘Mission: Impossible,’ ‘Planet Earth,’ and ‘Avatar,'” said Piper Curda, who voices Mabel, “And I said, ‘That doesn’t make any sense. Tell me more and I’m in.'”
“There’s a beautiful message in this movie,” added Bobby Moynihan, who voices King George. “But I don’t think it hits you over the head with it. I think there’s a lot of beauty in this world, like ours, and the more I see the movie, the different things happen for me. It’s absolutely beautiful to watch, but if you just watch it for the storyline itself and just for the heart, it’s equally as useful. It’s wonderful across the board.”
It isn’t long before Mabel and her new animal friends must team up to face an imminent human threat, a local city mayor voiced by Jon Hamm who wants to drive the animals out of their habitat so a new highway can be built in its place.
“When kids see this, the idea of sparking the imagination of, ‘What if I was able to be in the mind of that animal,'” Hamm told On The Red Carpet. “Whether it is the turtle in the classroom or the goldfish or their dog or whatever it is, I think that is going to spark the imagination of just a generation of kids to be creative and think about how animals move through the world and what part they play in our lives, whether they’re pets or wild animals or not. It’s important to remember that that’s a living creature that has, you know, a whole life.”
The special “Hoppers” episode of On The Red Carpet also includes a look at the film’s world premiere in Hollywood and additional interviews with director Daniel Chong, producer Nicole Paradis Grindle, and the film’s co-stars Dave Franco, Melissa Villaseñor, Vanessa Bayer and Eduardo Franco.
