CHELSEA PIERS, Manhattan (WABC) — For $2,000, you could skate alongside former New York Rangers hockey players at Chelsea Piers in New York City Tuesday night.
The charity game, “Skate With the Greats,” was about raising awareness and funds for the Ronald McDonald House.
“When I walked into the Ronald McDonald House in New York 35 years ago, and I got to hang out with the kids, I said, ‘this is for me.’ So, I’ve been lucky to be a part of this skate with the greats since it started 32 years ago,” said Former Rangers defenseman Brian Leetch.
The former Stanley Cup winner and MVP led the Rangers for 16 glorious years and even had his No. 2 retired. He and the other players donated their evening for families like Natalie Miranda and her son Marcellus, who received a special jersey Tuesday night.
Born at only 26 weeks, Marcellus spent the first part of his fragile life in the Neonatal ICU undergoing multiple surgeries.
Natalie Miranda didn’t need a place to sleep since she already lives in New York, but she did need a place to rest and recharge while at the hospital. Ronald McDonald House provided that and more.
“This young warrior didn’t survive because of one person. We survived because of a community, because of compassion, because of a room inside of a hospital that reminded me that I mattered too,” she said. “They supported me so I could keep showing up for him. So everyone here tonight, thank you.”
“We serve all five boroughs, but the families that come to the Ronald McDonald House really come from all over the world,” said Lucretia Gilbert, President and CEO of Ronald McDonald House New York.
They are hoping to raise $600,000 from the game and auction.
There are lots of great sports memorabilia for sale, and anyone can donate anytime online.
