NEW YORK (WABC) — Monday is the Jewish holiday of Purim, and many may notice heightened security across the city, especially at religious institutions and popular public sites.
There will be ramped up security at the Israeli Consulate and in places like Times Square.
After the U.S. and Israel launched strikes on Iran, there are growing concerns about possible retaliation.
FBI Director Kash Patel says he has instructed counterterrorism and intelligence teams to remain on high alert and mobilize any necessary security resources.
The Iranian regime has a long history of terrorist plots and assassinations both in the U.S. and abroad.
There are also concerns about Iran mobilizing proxies or sleeper cells, as well as the potential for cyberattacks.
Here in New York, law enforcement is also keeping a close watch on the federal courthouse in Downtown Brooklyn, where a Pakistani man went on trial last week on charges of trying to orchestrate the killing of a U.S. politician, potentially President Trump.
The NYPD’s deputy commissioner for counterterrorism says that while the public will notice heightened security, what they won’t see is the extensive coordination happening behind the scenes with federal, state, and local partners to monitor threats.
“This is to deter any would be bad actor-whether it’s a lone wolf type of person inspired by what’s happening overseas and wanting to take action here, or something more concerted or planned. Those resources are meant to deter that kind of activity,” said Rebecca Wiener, NYPD Deputy Commissioner for Counterterrorism.
Authorities say there are no credible threats in New York City, but they’re urging the public to stay vigilant.

If you see an unattended bag or suspicious behavior in a large crowd, alert law enforcement.
Stay vigilant in large gathering places or at symbolic American institutions. Like Wall Street, the New York public library, a transit hub or a museum.
Power grids or financial institutions could also become the target of a cyber-attack.
