TIMES SQUARE, Manhattan (WABC) — Saturday’s joint U.S.-Israel attack against Iran has sparked global reaction from New York to Washington D.C. and to London.
Rallies voiced strong opposition and condemned the attacks, amid fear of the consequences for the strikes.
Mammad Mah was one of many people who took to the streets of Times Square on Saturday to denounced the military strike.
“There’s no one that hates the Ayatollahs, hates the mullahs as much as we do. But none of that justify attacking a nation and killing innocent people,” Mah said.
Mah says his mother is in Iran and he has not heard from her since the attack began.
“She is a 78-year-old retired teacher. I know, like everything is cut off. There is no internet, there is no phone. We can just hope,” added Mah.
Several grassroots groups including The Answer Coalition organized a number of protests across the region in response to the military operation.
President Trump said the goal is to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime. He took to social media to urge Iranians to capitalize on the attack.
“If Donald Trump cared about the Iranian people, he would have lifted the crippling sanctions on the Iranian economy that would have allowed food, medicine and other necessities to flow freely in and out of Iran,” said Iayan Fuleihan of the People’s Forum.
Trump’s decision to launch a major attack on Iran has reignited the debate over who wields war power in American democracy.
“I hope our lawmakers can do everything they can, including passing the War Powers Resolution to stop this,” said Etan Mabourakh of the National Iranian American Council.
