ROXBURY, New Jersey (WABC) — Immigration advocates and community leaders are gathering in New Jersey on Saturday to protest ICE’s plans to convert a warehouse into a detention center.
The rally is being held at the Roxbury Town Hall at 12 p.m. Local officials, including Democratic nominee for New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District, Analilia Mejia, are expected to attend and speak out.
Hundreds of residents have been showing up to meetings to voice their concerns over the proposed detention site, which has already been purchased by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The 470,000 square foot facility would be able to hold up to 1,500 detainees, officials say.
Garden State lawmakers have voiced their opposition to the site, including New Jersey Sen. Andy Kim.
“This is a warehouse that is the size of over eight football fields and it’s right in the middle of a residential area,” Kim said. “And look, Roxbury is a town that voted for Trump, it’s a Republican leadership, but they don’t want it there.”
