BATH BEACH, Brooklyn (WABC) — A young girl who was fatally struck by a school bus in Brooklyn has been identified, as the driver now faces charges.
The victim is identified as 11-year-old Amira Aminova of Brooklyn.
The bus driver, 62-year-old Wawa Aurelus of Brooklyn, is charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care.
Video showed the moments leading up to the horrific and tragic accident.
Amira was attempting to cross the street when she was hit by the school bus that did not stop on 23rd Avenue and Bath Avenue just after 3 p.m. on Thursday.
It was just after school dismissal.
Video shows the girl standing at the corner with the right of way, then she darts across the street just as a school bus is making a turn.
“She sprinted. She just took off and tried to like, if you see a train coming and you try to run to beat the train, it was just like that. Being that I’ve driven those types of vehicles, it’s hard to see. Because the dimensions. You’re higher, there’s things blocking,” a resident said.
Just before she crosses the street, the driver is still approaching the intersection, then as the driver makes the turn, a glare from the sun appears to hit the windshield as she sprints across the street.
Amira was transported to Maimonides Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said.
Police say Aurelus did not remain at the scene, but was located by police hours later several miles away in Brooklyn.
