BOERUM HILL, Brooklyn (WABC) — Power problems began late Friday night for residents in Boerum Hill and neighboring Park Slope, leaving frustrated customers to deal with flickering lights, partial outages and disrupted routines through the weekend.
Currently, over 2,000 households are without stable power — this in the middle of historic low temperatures.
Along 3rd Avenue, several traffic lights are out and Con Edison trucks contribute to the traffic and congestion.
ConEd says that weather is responsible for the outages.
“We started getting flickering on Friday night,” said Boerum Hill resident Tosca DiMatteo.
Things quickly went downhill inside her apartment near St. Marks Place.
DiMatteo wasn’t alone. Multiple residents in the area reported similar power issues, including appliances cutting out unexpectedly.
“We were trying to run the oven and all of a sudden the fan kind of shut off,” said Travis Crawford, who also lives nearby.
According to Con Edison, by 10 p.m. on Friday, roughly 480 customers were experiencing service interruptions. By midday Sunday, that number had climbed to about 1,100 customers across parts of Brooklyn. By Monday, 2,000 households were impacted.
Con Edison crews were dispatched, but the utility says repairs have been challenging due to snowpack covering many manholes. Officials say road salt mixing with melting snow can seep underground and damage electrical equipment.
Back inside DiMatteo’s apartment, conditions were uneven. Her kitchen lights were out, while power in other rooms came and went. She did, however, still have heat, hot water, and a working refrigerator.
“We just have to plan ahead,” DiMatteo said. “We have a gas stove, so we can turn it on and make some eggs or something.”
Con Edison says crews will remain in the area as long as it takes to restore full service, and the utility company has brought in mobile generators.
The frigid cold is delaying service restoration, and ice and snow blocking in parked cars make some manholes difficult to access.
Frustratingly, local warming center PS 133 is no longer available, since school is in session.
ConEd expected restoration by 7 a.m. today, but now is walking back that timeline to some power restored by 7 p.m. tonight, and some by 7 p.m. tomorrow.
