LOS ANGELES — The Red Dragons are on a breakaway!
FX’s Emmy Award-winning docuseries “Welcome to Wrexham” was just renewed for three more seasons ahead of its fifth season premiere. The series helmed by Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds, the co-chairmen of Wrexham AFC, will be heading into its eighth season expected in 2029.
“A three-season order for a TV series is nearly unheard of and is only possible through the ground-breaking work of our Emmy-winning documentary team and the relentless rise of Wrexham AFC and all those working so hard to make sports history,” said Mac and Reynolds. “We are so happy we get to keep telling the Wrexham story for years to come.”
Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds talk about the luck they’ve had through all of the community support behind Wrexham AFC.
The series began as Mac and Reynolds set out to revitalize the third oldest professional football team in the world, purchasing the Red Dragons in 2020 with the goal of bringing the team up to the Premier League.
Now heading into the fifth season, the team has already made history by earning back-to-back-to-back promotions, and playing in the English Football League’s Championship for the first time in over 40 years. The story of the Red Dragons has brought in fans from the sport, the docuseries, and the local community.
“When we launched ‘Welcome to Wrexham,’ we never imagined the impact it would have on the club and the town while creating one of TV’s most successful and beloved docuseries,” Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment, said. “This three-season renewal is a testament to the vision of Rob and Ryan and the enduring connection they’ve built with fans around the world.”
Season 5 of “Welcome to Wrexham” premieres its two episodes May 14 on FXX, Hulu and Disney+, with weekly episodes afterwards. Catch up with all four previous seasons, available to stream now.
