YONKERS, New York (WABC) — Police are investigating after a portable toilet exploded in a park in Yonkers Monday night.
The destruction, which occurred around 8:20 p.m. in Bregano Park, prompted a significant response, complete with agents in protective suits collecting evidence. The entire perimeter of the park has been cordoned off. The focus of attention is a blue porta potty that has now been blasted to pieces.
They believe whoever did it used fireworks.
“Last night, it sounded like a bomb,” said resident Maria Sigismondo. “I was sitting in the living room and I went, ‘oh my god.’ The whole floor shook. And then my neighbors, you know, and everybody were just talking about it.
Residents in the area say there have been four or five similar explosions over the last few weeks, usually around the same time after nightfall.
“At first, we thought it was like fireworks. Then it got louder and bigger, but last night was really big,” said resident Kenny Reyes. “And now this.”
Yonkers Police contacted the county bomb squad which responded along with the FBI and ATF.
“I am pretty concerned, especially when you see the FBI, but hopefully they get to the bottom of it. You know, you worry about it,” Sigismondo said. “The world today is a little strange.”
