LOS ANGELES — A brand new day has dawned for your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
The first trailer for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has been released. In the past 24 hours, Marvel fans from across the world have released clips and snippets of the footage leading up to the full reveal.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”), the film picks up four years after the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
Peter Parker is now an adult living in total anonymity in New York City after the world’s memory of him was erased, including his former girlfriend, MJ (Zendaya), and best friend, Ned (Jacob Batalon), who are now freshmen at MIT.
In the trailer, an unseen Keith David narrates that spiders have three life cycles. Parker appears to be between two of his own, as his “full-time” commitment to being Spider-Man triggers what appears to be a physical mutation.
The trailer takes a darker turn as Dr. Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) warns Parker that his mutating DNA poses a threat, with footage showing the hero struggling to control the transformation and falling from buildings.
The trailer footage also offers several major reveals for Marvel fans, including the return of the Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and a first look at Michael Mando’s Mac Gargan (Scorpion). Gargan’s appearance in the film marks his return after a brief cameo in 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”
“Severance” actor Tramell Tillman also appears for a moment in the trailer, alongside a mystery character. Sadie Sink is also confirmed for the film’s cast, though Marvel and Sony are currently keeping her specific role under wraps.
While the action is heavy, the trailer does not shy away from Parker’s personal grief. Brief clips show him visiting Aunt May’s grave and watching from afar as MJ moves on with a new life and a potential new love interest.
The film serves as a lead-in to “Avengers: Doomsday,” which hits theaters on December 18.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” premieres in theaters July 31.
