First known case of severe Mpox strain discovered in New York City

NEW YORK (WABC) — The first known case of a more severe strain of Mpox has been discovered in New York City – it is called Mpox Clade I.

Since November 2024, there have been 11 cases of this more severe strain across the country.

Most of the cases involve someone who traveled internationally to outbreak areas in Africa.

The Health Department says the risk to the public is low.

A two-dose vaccine for Mpox was first made available in 2022 for people at high-risk.
