JAMAICA, Queens (WABC) — A search is underway for the driver who allegedly hit a woman on Jamaica Avenue in Queens and kept going.
She was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police are investigating why a car was in that area, which is only for buses and trucks.
The 58-year-old woman was crossing from north to south on Jamaica Avenue when she was struck by a dark-colored sedan around 3 p.m.
The scene unfolded in front of the Social Security building on Jamaica Avenue, leaving people inside wondering what had happened.
The car had been going fast enough on the avenue’s busway when it hit the woman crossing in the middle of the block, throwing her out of her shoes.
Vehicles that are not buses have to make the next turn off the Jamaica Avenue busway, designed to give buses in this transit hub more room.
“It was chaos. The fire department came, the ambulance came, and the police were already there,” an eyewitness said.
An electronic sign at the corner of Jamaica Avenue and Parsons Boulevard reminds drivers to slow down and observe the speed limit.
