NUTLEY, New Jersey (WABC) — As many basketball fans count down to March Madness, a special high school basketball game played out in Essex County, New Jersey on Thursday, that was just as important to a group of players.
Players from the Nutley Raiders High School basketball team joined students with autism and other disabilities to play a game that was also a lesson for everyone about inclusion, kindness and understanding.
It was a raucous introduction for the stars, rivaling the excitement of a March Madness game.
“It means so much more than what basketball is. It’s further than what the game is. It’s just a great time,” said Nutley junior, Anthony Straface.
The Nutley team took the court with the Phoenix Center Flames, showing basketball is a game of inclusion.
“This game is amazing. Our students work really hard all year long to play basketball, and they get to play with the Nutley High School team. So, it’s a dream come true for our students,” said Andrew Schuck, Assistant Principal of the Phoenix Center.
“It’s such a wonderful opportunity for socialization, for just getting together to have a good time,” said Julie Mower, Executive Director of the Phoenix Center.
The gym was packed with proud parents, students and supporters of a neurodivergent group of athletes from the Phoenix Center.
School spirit was overflowing as everyone had a chance to show off their skills and ability.

The halftime show featured the Nutley cheerleaders.
It turned into a high-scoring affair where everyone got a chance to play.
“These kids are competitive kids. They enjoy it. They want to win, but they also want to have fun,” said basketball coach, Jason Conroy.
It was a sure shot way to connect the community, showing students from ages 5 to 21 can soar in competition.
