GREENBURGH, Westchester County (WABC) — Shoveling after a blizzard can be challenging for many, especially older adults and people with disabilities.
One Westchester town gets help in the form of “snow angels.”
Vera Fitzgerald thanked Trisha, her snow angel, who spent the morning shoveling out Fitzgerald’s stairs, front walkway, and car.
“There should be more good people in the world. That’s what we need today. People helping people,” homeowner Vera Fitzgerald said.
Fitzgerald, who lives in Elmsford, is 67 and lost her husband last year.
“Especially as you get older, you don’t have a man in the house anymore to help you out. For someone to be so good with all of their heart, to really want to help out. It’s truly a blessing,” Fitzgerald.
Trisha is one of several Greenburgh ‘snow angels’ who have been busy this winter.
Over the last few years, the town has enlisted volunteers to shovel after snowstorms.
“Helping people that are in need and can’t do it themselves, it’s like reaching out and touching God,” Trisha said.
The program’s goal is to help older adults and people with disabilities, and the town is always looking for volunteers.
“It’s fulfilling. It has to be in your heart first of all, otherwise it’s a job. It’s not a job, it’s just wonderful to be able to help other people,” Trisha said.
In under a half hour, Trisha cleared out a path for a homeowner, enabling her to leave her house, even if it’s to check her mailbox.
