After decades as a quietly radical fixture in the West Village, The Pleasure Chest is throwing one last neighborhood bash—and it comes with serious discounts. The longtime sex-positive retailer is hosting a farewell sale with up to 40% off storewide as it prepares to close its Village storefront on Saturday, February 28, 2026.
The 40% discount runs through the store’s final day of business on February 28. Exclusions apply, but the deals still mark one of the biggest markdowns the brand has offered locally in years. The remaining inventory is expected to move quickly as regulars and curious newcomers alike swing by for a last browse.
For longtime fans, the closing is sentimental. The Pleasure Chest has spent more than 50 years reshaping what a pleasure-focused retail experience can look like—brightly lit, education-forward and entirely inclusive. Founded in 1971, the company helped normalize conversations around sexual wellness in New York long before they became mainstream, turning its West Village shop into both a resource hub and a retail destination.
“The West Village has been an important chapter for us,” said Brian Robinson, CEO of The Pleasure Chest, in a release. “We wanted to give our community a proper sendoff—a moment to come in, reconnect with our team and take advantage of meaningful savings before we close.”
The closure follows a previously announced consolidation of the brand’s New York footprint. Rather than exiting the city entirely, The Pleasure Chest is focusing its retail operations around its Upper East Side flagship, a larger, more modern space designed to host expanded product lines, workshops and programming centered on sexual health and inclusivity. The company will also serve local customers online.
Still, the West Village store has long been part of the neighborhood’s quietly rebellious retail DNA, challenging old-school adult shop stereotypes with a department-store feel. Its departure is part of a broader shift in the area’s commercial landscape, where rising rents and changing retail strategies have reshaped many of the neighborhood’s most familiar storefronts.
If you’ve been meaning to pop in, this is your window. Between the steep markdowns and the nostalgia factor, the next few days could be your last chance to experience one of the city’s most recognizable pleasure destinations before the lights go out for good.
