NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — Alternate side parking rules go back into effect on today, for the first time in weeks following January’s major snowstorm.
Drivers finally need to move their cars so street sweepers can clear the roads.
Many cars have been buried under snow since the January 26 storm. Some vehicles haven’t been turned on in weeks, and many drivers may not realize they need to move their vehicles today. So it’s important to get the word out.
The storm in late January dumped heavy snow across the city, forcing officials to suspend alternate side parking. Since then, freezing temperatures kept the snow solidly packed, preventing it from melting.
The Mamdani administration extended the suspension from Monday to Wednesday this week in observance of Presidents’ Day, the Lunar New Year, Losar, and Ash Wednesday.
The Department of Sanitation even brought in large waterspraying trucks to manually melt icecovered streets. Cars were stuck, roads were narrow, and many neighborhoods were essentially blocked in.
With rules now back in effect, remember to check the posted signs before heading to work.
Looking ahead, the City Council will hold a hearing Monday to review how snow was removed from streets, sidewalks and crosswalks, as well as broader issues around pedestrian and transit access during winter storms.
