ELMHURST, Queens (WABC) — One woman was killed and several others injured in a devastating fire in Elmhurst, Queens.
Flames started on the first floor of the home on 83-32 Dongan Avenue just before 7 p.m. Monday and quickly rose to the top of the home and spread to neighboring buildings on both sides.
Crews were still searching for a person who was trapped in the basement who is still unaccounted for Tuesday morning.
A 34-year-old woman was killed dead, a 22-year-old man is listed in critical condition, six people are in stable condition, and two of them are just 10 and 13 years old.
Rescuing people was quite the challenge for the FDNY, as some of the victims had to jump from windows to get out.
Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control around 1 a.m. Tuesday. The intense burst of orange flames glowed in the dark as thick gray and black smoke billowed into the air.
Multiple ladders extended overhead as officials say the fire quickly rose to the top of the home and spread to neighboring buildings on both sides. Neighbors this morning are looking for their next steps.
“My mother, they called me. I was at work. They told me there was a fire next to our house and I came in and they said the fire, the fire started blowing,” a neighbor said. “My apartment is filled with smoke so they tell us they’re gonna just tear down everything. I think they’re gonna look into my apartment. So I don’t have nowhere to go.”
Two firefighters also suffered minor injuries, and 40 neighbors have been impacted, unable to get back inside their homes Tuesday morning.
The Buildings Department will also have to evaluate the structural integrity of the home. Investigators are working to figure out what caused the fire.
