NEW YORK (WABC) — A bitter blast of extreme cold continues to take hold over New York, with city officials urging residents to stay indoors if possible.
An Extreme Cold Warning is in effect across the Tri-State area until 1 p.m. on Sunday amid bright but still dangerously cold conditions.
It’s why the city is opening even more warming shelters and buses across the five boroughs, including in Midtown Manhattan.

Eyewitness News spoke to some residents who say the extreme cold has been unbearable.
“I’m not feel good, I feel bad because the weather is very, very cold,” Brooklyn resident Mohemad Deillo said.
Bronx resident Courtney Cozart agrees.
“It’s brutal out here, I mean it’s not fit for human life to be out here, for sure, ” Cozart said. “I’m crying now from the cold, that’s how I feel.”
At least 17 people have died over the past few weeks since the snowstorm and cold snap. Mayor Zohran Mamdani delivered pizza to a firehouse on Staten Island to thank first responders for their critical work in the extreme cold.
The mayor is increasing visibility with a digital appeal to New Yorkers. The Department of Social Services has activated an Enhanced Cold Blue, intensifying efforts to reach the homeless.
“This is all the work that city workers are doing in tandem with more than 550 outreach workers who were out there at all times of day to bring homeless New Yorkers inside, to ensure that we’re connecting them with safe havens, with shelters, even with hotel rooms, to ensure that no one is outside,” Mamdani said.
The mayor is stressing that even a short time outside can be dangerous.
Meanwhile, city officials are urging residents to layer up if they need to go outside. Residents are also urged to call 311 if they see someone in need.
