Even after 32 years, actress Toni Collette still hears, “You’re terrible, Muriel,” from fans!
The phrase originated from the 1994 rom-com “Muriel’s Wedding,” starring Collette, Rachel Griffiths, Bill Hunter, Sophie Lee and Daniel Lapaine.
When On The Red Carpet caught up with Collette at the Sundance Film Festival for the 20th anniversary screening of “Little Miss Sunshine,” we couldn’t resist asking her about what she called a “life-changing” film.
“Yeah, I still get it. I get it!” she said about hearing the quote from fans. “I love it. And I love her.”
“That film really changed my life. I did not have a career before that. If I hadn’t done the movie, I probably wouldn’t be standing here. It changed my life in a big way. So, I will be forever grateful for Muriel, and I love it when people quote movies back to me, because it just means that they connected with it, and they carry some part of it in their heart.”
Since starring in “Muriel’s Wedding,” Colette has gone on to notable roles in “The Sixth Sense,” for which she earned an Oscar nomination, “About a Boy,” “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Hereditary,” “Knives Out” and many other memorable films.
