NEW JERSEY (WABC) — If you rely on NJ Transit, you’ll want to plan ahead for Sunday.
With a winter storm expected to impact New Jersey, NJ Transit announced it will temporarily suspend most service systemwide to keep riders and employees safe.
Here’s what riders need to know:
- Bus, light rail, and Access Link service will be suspended starting at 4 a.m. Sunday
- Rail service will operate on a regular weekend schedule until 2 p.m., then shut down for the rest of the day
If you’re taking the train, NJ Transit says you’ll need to be on a train that reaches your final destination by 2 p.m. Riders should check njtransit.com later this evening for details on the final eastbound and westbound trains for each rail line.
Once service is suspended, it will remain shut down through the end of the service day Sunday and will not resume until conditions safely allow. NJ Transit says it will provide updates on Monday service later Sunday as crews assess storm impacts across the state.
Officials urge residents to stay put
NJ Transit echoed Governor Sherrill’s message asking New Jersey residents to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.
Keeping roads clear allows local, county, and state crews to remove snow more quickly – which helps NJ TRANSIT get buses and trains back up and running as soon as it’s safe.
Riders are encouraged to check njtransit.com frequently for the latest information on when service will resume.
Why you might still see trains moving
Even though service will be suspended, customers may still see trains or light rail vehicles operating.
NJ Transit says those vehicles will not be carrying passengers. They’re being used to keep tracks, switches, and overhead wires clear of snow and ice. Motorists should continue to obey railroad crossing gates, and pedestrians should only cross tracks at designated crossings, as equipment may still be moving throughout the system.
Emergency crews are on standby
NJ Transit’s Emergency Operations Center will be open throughout the storm, closely tracking weather conditions as they develop. Key personnel will be positioned both in the field and at transit facilities to quickly respond to any issues during the storm.

Once the storm passes, NJ Transit says it will restart service.
While service is paused, NJ Transit crews will continue working behind the scenes to prepare for a safe and gradual return once conditions improve.
On the rails
Rail cars and locomotives have been fully winterized, including inspections of heating systems, ventilation, thermostats, weather stripping, and electronics
Locomotive fuel and filters have been switched from summer to winter blends
More than 750 switches and switch heaters, overhead wire systems, 12 movable bridges, and wayside power systems have been inspected and maintained
Jetenginepowered snow blowers are ready to clear snow and ice from tracks and critical switching areas
All locomotives are equipped with snowplows
Salt supplies are fully stocked, with the ability to obtain more if needed
Treetrimming crews are on standby to respond to fallen limbs that could interfere with tracks or overhead wires
On the buses
Maintenance teams have checked heating systems, engine fluids, tires, windshield wipers, doors, and air brake systems across NJ TRANSIT’s more than 2,000 buses
Snowfighting equipment and winter supplies are ready to keep 52 bus loops, terminals, and parking lots clear statewide
Bulk salt supplies are stocked across the system, with additional salt stored at each bus garage
On light rail lines
Snowplows are ready to clear station platforms and parkandride lots
Switch heaters have been tested across all three light rail systems
Supplies such as calcium chloride, snow shovels, and scrapers are staged throughout the system
Snow blowers and backup generators have been checked and are ready
Subcontractors are in place to help clear stations, walkways, and parking facilities
Light rail managers will coordinate with local municipalities where trains run on city streets
At stations and terminals
Stations will be pretreated with salt ahead of the storm
All rail station heaters have been inspected and confirmed to be working properly
Staff will monitor platforms to help maintain safe walking conditions
