NEW YORK (WABC) — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is being celebrated across the Tri-State on Monday with ceremonies and a day of service to honor his legacy.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul were among the officials that attended a celebration at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
On Sunday, Hochul said she continues to fight Trump immigration policies in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, during an address at Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem.
“Today, we have people struggling because they’re in fear, they are too afraid to go to church because an ICE agent may take them out of this place and take them to a detention center…that is what is happening in America today,” Hochul said. “So I have said in my state of the state, no ICE agent can come into a sacred place like a church, or a hospital or a day care center or a school without a warrant signed by a judge. You will not violate this sacred space and if you cross the line, if you deny someone their constitutional rights, you should have a right to sue them in court.”
Martin Luther King III, the son of the civil rights leader, and his wife Arndrea, are urging everyone to play a role in keeping his father’s legacy alive by working to improve their communities.
While the federal holiday is a day off work for many, it is also observed as a national day of service and people are urged to volunteer and help causes and nonprofits that give back to neighborhoods and people in need.
Federal, state and local government officers are closed and the same goes for post offices, banks and public schools.
