LONG ISLAND CITY, Queens (WABC) — Police are searching for the suspect accused of stealing a car while an elderly person was in the backseat in Queens.
The car theft happened around 7:15 p.m. on Saturday near 44th Drive and 23rd Street in Long Island City.
According to the NYPD, the driver of a 2016 Subaru left his car idling with a 72-year-old man in the backseat in order to go into a store. When the driver entered the store, the suspect jumped in the vehicle and took off with the car and man inside.
Police later found the car and the 72-year-old passenger near 53rd Avenue and 44th Street. The suspect had fled prior to officers arriving on scene.
No one was injured during the theft.
Authorities are now trying to determine what led up to the incident.
