BERGEN COUNTY, New Jersey (WABC) — Firefighters moved fast to rescue a man from the Hackensack River on Tuesday.
A vehicle plunged into the Hackensack River in New Jersey and the driver was trapped, officials said.
First arriving units were waved in by citizens and found the driver in distress and struggling to escape.
With an incoming tide and an immediate danger to life, two firefighters were lowered into the frigid river to begin assisting the driver who had his leg trapped, according to the Hackensack Fire Department.
A floatation device was placed on the driver along with safety lines, and the driver was moved to the top of the vehicle.
Marine 1 was deployed and crews worked together to transfer the driver to the rescue boat, according to officials.
Photos from the Hackensack Fire Department showed firefighters pulling the person out of the submerged vehicle.
Once the driver was back on dry land, they were immediately placed into the care of HUMC EMS for evaluation and treatment.
It was unclear if the person was injured.
