SUNSET PARK, Brooklyn (WABC) — On Sunday there were protests outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn where Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro remains locked up.
They called him the ‘People’s President’ and gathered outside in Sunset Park to demand authorities immediately release him
“I really want to protect the rule of law,” said one demonstrator.
Many felt that the rule of law was violated early Saturday morning when President Trump gave the green light to bomb parts of Caracas and physically remove the Venezuelan leader from power.
This was a sentiment echoed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in a phone call with President Trump on Saturday.
“How would you characterize that conversation with the President? It was forthright, direct and brief, and that’s what I’ve appreciated about the conversations we’d had. They’ve been honest,” Mamdani said.
On Sunday, Senator Charles Schumer called the covert military action ‘reckless.’
“You don’t treat lawlessness with lawless,” said Schumer.
He also painted a dismal picture of the notion of the U.S. running Venezuela.
“We have learned through the years when America tries to do regime change and nation-building in this way. The American people pay the price in both blood and in dollars,” Schumer added.
However, Nina from Argentina disagrees, having seen friends suffer so long under Maduro’s rule.
“I don’t think it’s fair, I think everybody needs to live with freedom and not be scared,” she said.
