TIMES SQUARE, Manhattan (WABC) — It has become an annual tradition – Good Riddance Day in Times Square. It is a chance to put all the bad memories of the current year to paper and release it in hopes of better luck in the new year.
Tamara Litt did something very brave in 2025 – she donated bone marrow to her older sister who was battling cancer. So as Litt prepares to enter 2026, she is hopeful to say goodbye to illness.
“We were a perfect match. All illnesses…no more of that,” she said.
That is why Litt attended the 19th annual ‘Good Riddance Day’ event in Times Square. It is a chance for New Yorkers or tourists to write down the bad memories or thoughts from 2025 on a Broadway show-style ticket, rip it up and save the stub for the new year.
The event is organized by the Times Square Alliance and One Times Square. The co-organizers of the big New Year’s Eve celebration that will take place in a few days.
The actor Jonathan Bennett hosts the purge.
“It’s inspired bt the Latin-American tradition – burn life-sized dolls to get rid of the past and negative energy. Create space for the future,” Bennett says.
And for those who lined up, there were many things to leave behind – like negativity, political instability and high rent.
There were also many things to look forward to – some saying they want to be more positive in the new year.
After saying goodbye and good riddance to 2025, the very same spot now turns toward the future and will be the backdrop for the world’s biggest New Year’s Eve party. One million people are expected to fill Times Square to watch the red, white and blue ball drop and welcome in 2026.
