LOS ANGELES — It’s a big milestone for this cult classic!
20th Century Studios’ “Waiting to Exhale” is celebrating its 30-year anniversary.
The film, which stars Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, Lela Rochon and the late Whitney Houston, follows four friends navigating their relationships, careers and families.
The stars reunited to discuss the film with On The Red Carpet, but not without recognizing their friend and co-star, Houston, first.
“30 years later, we have an angel on our shoulders. She’s not with us physically, but she’s definitely with us in spirit,” Bassett tells us.
Rochon explains, “We’re so blessed we had that time with her. And to get to know her and hear young people say, ‘Oh my, God. You knew Whitney Houston?’ Yeah, we did! And it was magical.”
Since its release in 1995, the film has developed a lasting legacy.
“‘Waiting to Exhale’ was all kinds of love,” says Devine. “It helps you to do what it says. It helps you to exhale and to enjoy what love and friendship is about.”
Bassett reflects on the new audience the film has found, three decades since its release. “I’m thrilled that this generation is enthralled and is taking to our little movie from 30 years ago”
“It’s one of the proudest things I’ve ever done in my life,” Rochon says. “It’s everlasting. It will outlive us.”
As a part of the celebration, Disney Concerts brought the film to life for an audience in New York, where stars including Andra Day, Tamar Braxton and Deborah Cox, performed tracks from the memorable soundtrack in front of a live audience.
“Waiting to Exhale” is streaming on Hulu.
